Abstract:
This article is on the workshop Computer-Aided Qualitative Research Asia 2010, held by Merlien Institute (http://www.merlien.org/) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This workshop, held for the first time in Asia, provided excellent opportunities for delegates from various countries to interact with international experts, and discuss innovative ways of qualitatively analyzing data using computer-aided qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS). The author participated in this event from Japan.

This article reports on presentations in the workshop and discusses the outlook for CAQDAS usage. In particular, the paper focuses on how to select appropriate CAQDAS, synchronization of multimedia data and text data - a new feature of CAQDAS, examples of research using different research methods in various regions and disciplines, and development of open-source CAQDAS. In addition, this article, targeted for Japanese readers not accustomed to CAQDAS, discusses the role of CAQDAS, advantages and disadvantages of using CAQDAS, and how to disseminate CAQDAS in Japan.
